Background of the Study
Wase Local Government Area (LGA) in Plateau State, Nigeria, is home to a rich cultural heritage and diverse natural attractions that make it a potential hub for tourism development. The area is known for its unique geographical features, such as the Wase Rock, which is a significant landmark in the region. Despite these natural and cultural advantages, tourism development in Wase LGA has been slow due to various geopolitical factors, including the region’s location, infrastructure deficits, and political challenges. The geopolitical location of Wase, situated in the north-central region of Nigeria, plays a significant role in determining its access to national and international markets, as well as its ability to attract investments and tourists (Zubairu & Ibrahim, 2024). This study will examine the extent to which the geopolitical location of Wase LGA has influenced its tourism development, considering both the opportunities and challenges it presents.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite its natural resources and cultural attractions, tourism in Wase LGA has been hindered by geopolitical challenges such as poor infrastructure, political instability, and the lack of strategic promotion at both the state and national levels. The region's location, while advantageous for proximity to key urban centers, has not been fully leveraged to foster tourism development. This study seeks to evaluate how the geopolitical location of Wase LGA has influenced its tourism potential and identify strategies that can be implemented to overcome these challenges.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the role of Wase LGA’s geopolitical location in its tourism development.
To identify the opportunities and challenges associated with tourism development in Wase, given its geographical context.
To propose strategies to leverage Wase's geographical advantages for tourism growth.
1.4 Research Questions
How has the geopolitical location of Wase LGA influenced its tourism development?
What opportunities does Wase's location present for tourism, and what challenges does it face?
What strategies can be implemented to enhance tourism development in Wase LGA?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
The geopolitical location of Wase LGA has a significant influence on its tourism development, both positively and negatively.
Poor infrastructure and political instability in the region hinder the potential for tourism growth in Wase.
Leveraging Wase's location and addressing its geopolitical challenges will enhance its tourism sector.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide a comprehensive understanding of the influence of geopolitical location on tourism development in Wase LGA. The findings will inform local and state government policies aimed at promoting tourism in the region. By identifying both the opportunities and challenges posed by the region's location, this research will offer valuable insights for tourism planners, investors, and policymakers seeking to harness Wase's tourism potential (Zubairu & Ibrahim, 2024).
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to Wase Local Government Area in Plateau State and focuses on the impact of geopolitical location on tourism development. Limitations include the availability of up-to-date data on tourism statistics and the potential biases in local government reports on tourism activities.
